Local company takes the lead with biomass and wind-generated electricity

BRAHAM, Minn. – East Central Energy (ECE) recognized MINPACK, Pine City, Minn., for its commitment to renewable energy. The microfilm aperture card manufacturing company recently signed up to purchase blocks of renewable energy each month from East Central Energy. ECE presents a recognition plaque to businesses that support renewable energy development to show customers and employees that the business encourages this worthwhile effort.

The plaque ECE presented to MINPACK declares: “This business supports renewable energy. By purchasing blocks of renewable energy from East Central Energy, this business is promoting the development of renewable energy and helping to make our world a cleaner place.”

“It’s extremely important for everyone today to recognize the need to think and act green, that is to support environmentally sound innovations” says Bob Thompson, owner-president of MINPACK. “I feel that it is vital for my company as a new business in the community to be recognized as a proponent of renewable energy.”

ECE offers its members unique renewable energy sources including Wellspring® wind energy and cow power (biomass energy created with methane extracted from manure). The electric co-op’s members can buy renewable energy in 100-kilowatt-hour (kWh) blocks at 51 cents a block above the regular electricity rate. The premium recently decreased due to the success of the renewable energy program. By purchasing renewable energy, ECE members reduce the demand on coal-fired generation plants. This helps slow down consumption of non-renewable resources.

"At East Central Energy we recognize and commend members like Bob Thompson for their leadership to help conserve our energy supply and our environment," says Terry Grabau, strategic account and community development manager for East Central Energy.

East Central Energy www.eastcentralenergy.com is a member-owned electric cooperative that serves more than 56,000 homes, farms and businesses in east central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. ECE also provides Internet and long distance services.
